Rarity is not cosmetic; it is a direct multiplier on the five stats the game uses to balance axes: chop speed, yield, biome access, cost efficiency, and upgrade smoothness. Understanding rarity is the difference between buying the right axe at the right time and burning cash on a shiny tool that does less work than the one you already have.

Common axes

• Stat range — base chop speed, 1.0x to 1.4x yield multiplier.
• Biome access — biome one only.
• Where they drop — the starter Twig Splitter (sell immediately), the Oak Hatchet from the in-game shop.
• Best use — the first twenty minutes of a new save. Replace them as soon as you can afford a Rare.

Common axes are not bad — they are just the floor. The Oak Hatchet is the right first upgrade precisely because it is a Common that punches above its rarity.

Rare axes

• Stat range — 1.5x to 1.9x yield, faster chop speed, biome one and partial biome two access.
• Where they drop — the in-game shop, some worker milestone rewards.
• Best use — most of the early-to-mid game. The Rare Pine Pick and Rare Maple Maul are both A-tier picks on the tier list — Rare is where most active players settle for the longest stretch.

Rares are the sweet spot of Carve Wood’s economy: noticeably stronger than Commons, but cheap enough that you can swap to a new one without bankrupting your lumber yard. If you only ever buy one rarity tier, buy Rare.

Epic axes

• Where they drop — the in-game shop at top-tier price points, milestone rewards for late-game progression, very rare event drops.

Every axe has an upgrade track that unlocks at higher rarity tiers. Upgrading a Common caps at level 5; a Rare caps at level 10; Epic at 15; Legendary at 20. The cap is what keeps lower-tier axes relevant for short windows — a max-level Common out-earns a fresh Rare for the first hour after the upgrade. Use that hour to bank cash for the next tier.

Pair rarity with the right worker
